History behind [Shizuoka Prefecture] Utsunoya Tunnel

The haunting story of Utsu no Tani Tunnel in Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the most famous tales of paranormal activity in Japan. Located on the Hakone mountain range, the tunnel is known for its dark history and whispered tales of ghosts and mysterious sightings.

The Utsu no Tani Tunnel was built in 1891 to connect the villages of Utsu and Imaichi, in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is said that over the course of its construction, over 600 workers lost their lives due to accidents, exhaustion and other causes. This tragedy was naturally followed by numerous tales of hauntings, with the workers’ souls said to be trapped in the tunnel forever.

The stories only grew darker after a series of deaths and accidents over the years. In 1910, a landslide occurred, killing three workers and closing the tunnel for a few days. In 1935, a man was decapitated by a passing train. In 1936, a train driver reported seeing the ghost of a man near the tunnel’s entrance. The sightings became so frequent that soon all of the villagers were avoiding the tunnel.

One of the most famous stories is that of a young woman from Utsu who took a shortcut through the tunnel one night. She was never seen alive again, her body discovered the next morning on the tracks. Legend has it that the woman was killed by a vengeful spirit that had been waiting in the darkness.

Over the past century, countless stories of supernatural sightings in the Utsu no Tani Tunnel have spread. Most believe that the ghosts of the workers are still trapped in the tunnel and are seeking vengeance on anyone who passes through. Other tales tell of a mysterious light that glows in the darkness, or of a strange man who appears in the shadows.

The Utsu no Tani Tunnel remains a local legend and a powerful reminder of the tragedies that took place at its entrance. Whether the stories are true or not, the tunnel is a haunting reminder of its dark past. To this day, locals avoid the area, preferring to stick to the broad daylight of the surrounding countryside.
