The Haunting Story of the Former Tokuguchi Tunnel in Fukui Prefecture
Located in the ancient province of Fukui Prefecture in Japan, the former Tokuguchi Tunnel has long been surrounded by tales of mystery and haunting. It’s a place where travelers have felt a strong eerie presence since at least the Edo period (1603-1868), when the tunnel was used as a military route and a way for travelers to make their way between the towns of Obama and Takefu on the Wakasa Bay coast.
In 1854, the Tokuguchi Tunnel was built as the only route between these two towns. It was initially constructed as a wooden structure, designed to be like a traditional passageway for wagons drawn by horses. However, a few years later in 1863, the wooden structure was replaced by a stone one. It was about 950 feet long, 10 feet high and 8 feet wide.
The tunnel’s dark and eerie atmosphere led to many strange occurrences and reports of sightings. Some claimed to have heard the sound of horses galloping through the tunnel. Others experienced inexplicable cold winds inside the tunnel and sightings of ghostly figures. Some of the reports of supernatural activities were even reported in the local newspapers.
The stories eventually reached a fever pitch, with rumors suggesting that travelers could hear the ghostly voices of those who had taken their own lives in the tunnel, or the rumble of carts and horses coming from nowhere. Even the local samurai, who were responsible for protecting the entrance of the tunnel, refused to go near the tunnel.
As the years went by, these stories about the Tokuguchi Tunnel continued to pass from generations to generations. Some even suggested that the tunnel was a port for the spirits of the dead, and travelers were warned to never enter the tunnel after dark.
By the 1970s, the tunnel had become so infamous that it was closed off to the public. It was finally demolished in the late 1980s, and all that remains are the tales of the supernatural activity that used to take place inside the tunnel. It’s said that the spirits of those who died in the tunnel still roam the area and anyone who gets too close may be cursed with bad luck.
To this day, the former Tokuguchi Tunnel remains a mysterious place and a source of fear and fascination. Even though the tunnel has been demolished, the stories and legends about it live on and it continues to be a place of eerie mystery.
