Slavic and Eastern European Folklore: Baba Yaga to Rusalka

This hub gathers Slavic and nearby Eastern European material: Russia, Poland, the Czech lands, the Balkans, Romania, Moldova, Hungary and the Baltic coast. Folklorists and ethnographers recorded much of it, and the articles lean on those records where they exist. The rusalka article notes that ethnographers found an older, benevolent spring spirit underneath the vengeful drowned woman most people picture. The domovoi was recorded by nineteenth-century ethnographers working in Russian villages. The strigoi article puts Romanian vampire stories before Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula.
