History behind [Kanagawa Prefecture] Senda tunnel
The Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan has a chilling and mysterious history that surrounds the infamous Chitama Tunnel, or what is also known as the 1000-Ton Tunnel. The Chitama Tunnel, located in the Odawara district of the prefecture, was constructed in 1904 and extends for more than 800 meters.
The story of the 1000-Ton Tunnel is an eerie one, and it is said that the tunnel itself is haunted by the spirits of those who were cursed by the tunnel’s construction. It is believed that the tunnel was cursed by an ancient god, who struck the tunnel with a lightning bolt and caused it to become filled with the ghosts of those who were once cursed.
The legend of the Chitama Tunnel tells the story of an old man who was living in the nearby Bijutsu village. The old man was a monk, and he owned a small temple near the entrance to the Chitama Tunnel. One day, the monk was visited by a mysterious visitor who told him of the curse that plagued the area. The visitor told him that if any person were to pass through the tunnel without offering a daily prayer, they would be cursed and suffer the fate of eternal damnation.
The old monk took the mysterious visitor’s warning seriously and decided to post a sign near the entrance of the tunnel that read, “Daily prayer must be offered before passage through this tunnel.” To ensure that passing travelers heeded the warning, he also placed a statue of a man near the entrance of the tunnel.
Unfortunately, this warning was ignored by many passersby. As time passed, tales of horrifying ghosts began to surface in the area, and many locals began to blame the Chitama Tunnel for the terrible occurrences. People reported seeing a ghostly figure standing at the entrance to the tunnel, beckoning people to enter before vanishing without a trace.
As news of the ghostly figure spread, more people began to report sightings of a giant, 1000-ton boulder rolling through the tunnel. Those who were brave enough to follow the boulder were said to have been killed or never seen again. Rumors of other strange occurrences from within the tunnel also spread, such as people hearing mysterious voices, being attacked by spectral figures, and other inexplicable phenomena.
The legend of the Chitama Tunnel has remained a part of the folklore of the Kanagawa Prefecture for centuries, and its reputation of being cursed and haunted still lingers today. Although the tunnel is no longer in use, locals and visitors alike still whisper tales of the 1000-ton boulder, mysterious figures, and spectral voices that haunt the area. For those who are brave enough, the Chitama Tunnel remains as a gateway to the supernatural world that lies just beyond.
